AFR Utilisation

Calcium carbonate can be produced as a by-product of sygar refinig process. It can be used to replace fireclay used in building and construction materials, specificaaly in UK. Benefits of using calcium carbonate in bricks: renewable alternative to traditional elements used to add colour to the bricks, can be used to replace fireclay in brick industry, no water requirement due to pre-wetted condition and enables kilns to rum more energy efficienctly at consistent temp resulting in faster production times while at the same time sustainable for the environment. T&L Sugars has made it in collaboration with York Handmade Bricks

Air-blast oil cooler (Reduction of borehole water abstraction)

Air-blast oil coolers efficiently reduce water consumption in sugar mills by using ambient air to cool oil, eliminating the need for borehole water. Unlike water coolers, they are more cost-effective and require less maintenance, saving money for sugar mills. These coolers work by blowing compressed air through tubes, allowing hot oil to absorb heat from borehole water, thereby cooling the water and reducing evaporation. This process involves pumping borehole water to the cooler, using compressed air to cool the oil, absorbing heat from the water, and returning the cooled water to the borehole.

Alternative for traditional bricks used for construction

Instead of concrete bricks for construction, baggasse from sugarcane can be combined with mineral binders to form huge bricks. They are four times lighter and their carbon emissions are 20 times lighter than traditional bricks. They have named it sugarcrete. It has good structural, thermal, acoustic and fire properties. It is sustainable, versatile and reusable.

Bagasse based citric acid

Bagasse is mixed with the fungus Aspergillus or Penicillium and with the help of advanced biotechnology processes effectively produces all the enzymes for converting bagasse into sugars for citric acid production. Citric acid is required by industries nearby a sugar mill and other pharmaceutical industries. This can be produced on-site and consumed there only reducing the supply cost os enzymes. The large amount of water and chemicals required during the conversion process is made into a crop fertilizer. The temperature and presure for bagasse treatment was found to be 75 deg celcius rather than high temp of 160 deg celcius hence reducing energy consumption.

Biogas

Waste water fron sugar industries are treated to produce biogas which is to generate electricity and heat. Biogas can also be purified to produce biomethane and can be used as renewable natural gas. The residual matter can be further treated and used as a soil conditioner or fertilizer. Benefits of this technique include poduction of renewable energy, waste reduction, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in addition to increasing energy efficiency and sustainability in the sugar industry.

Chemical Clean-in-Place (CIP) heater

This chemical CIP method uses chemicals to clean the heater automatically with a press button, without disassembling the parts of the heater using latest technology hence saving saving water, money and time. It increases the efficiency of the plant. Also, the upgraded heaters efficiently transfer heat and extract more heat which would be otherwise wasted.

Falling Film Evaporator

A falling film evaporator is an industrial heat exchanger that concentrates liquids through a thin film flowing down vertical tubes or plates. The liquid enters the top, forming a film that descends due to gravity. Simultaneously, a heating medium circulates on the outer surface, causing evaporation as the liquid moves down. Vapors are collected at the bottom, and concentrated liquid is separated. In the sugar industry, these evaporators are utilized for concentrating sugar beet or cane juice, producing high-quality syrups or molasses with specific sugar concentrations for further processing into refined sugar or other products.

Multiple-Effect Evaporator

A multi-effect evaporator efficiently removes water from a solution through sequential evaporation stages at decreasing pressures. The process involves heating the solution in vessels, utilizing vapor from each stage to heat the next, minimizing energy needs. Widely applied in the sugar industry, these evaporators concentrate sugar beet or cane juice, producing high-quality syrups or molasses with specific sugar concentrations for refining into various sugar-based products.

Science Based Targets Initiative

ClimateCane tracker is a target setting tool that sugarcane producers and companies that purchase from them can reduce GHG emissions. This includes emissions that comes from forestry, land use and agriculture. It can altered based on the company's growth and operations. A baseline emissions are calculated per kg of sugarcane production and an achievable target is set which is futher increased year on year. The emissions include scope 1, scope 2 and scope 3 emissions in the sugarcane production.

Ultrafiltration

Ultrafiltration (UF) employs semipermeable membranes (with pore sizes from 0.001 to 0.01 micrometers) to separate particles and macromolecules from smaller molecules based on size. In the sugar industry, UF is utilized to eliminate impurities like proteins and polysaccharides from sugar solutions, enhancing the quality and extending shelf life. Additionally, UF concentrates sugar solutions, reducing energy needs for water evaporation and contributing to cost savings and environmental benefits.
